What is fantasy makeup?

MODULE  1.1

Course Introduction

  • Fantasy makeup involves using cosmetic products to beautify the face, body, and skin. It is a powerful tool for altering features and creating magical or imaginary characters. Whether for children’s parties, festivals, special events, carnivals, shows, or advertisements, artistic makeup can be used for all kinds of occasions. It is common to be requested for film or theater productions. Fantastic movies from Walt Disney, adventure or sci-fi films like Avatar or X-Men, require such makeup, allowing creativity and imagination to flourish.

  • Examples include body painting, also called body-painting*.

  • Makeup can range from beauty enhancement to creating fairy-tale creatures (hence the fantasy theme), monsters for special effects, and include airbrush makeup.

  • Makeup is typically applied by a makeup artist and increasingly by the artists themselves.

  • Professional makeup artists are hired to create and teach fantasy makeup through tailored programs or schools worldwide, such as Cirque du Soleil via T.O.H.U.

  • Cosmetics used for fantasy makeup can be grease-based or alcohol-based, depending on needs. They are often used for hybrid makeup (lighter shade than foundation).

  • The product choice depends on several factors, such as desired duration and location of application.
